September 7: This Day in History

While thinking of a topic for my blog, I couldn't really decide on one, so I ended up with the topic that changes as the day changes.  I'm going to use the History Channel's website as my main source of what events happen on a certain day in History, whether insightful, meaningful, patriotic, or interesting.  (On a side note: I always thought this day was special, because it also happens to be my mom's birthday!)

September 7, 1996: Tupac Shakur is shot in Las Vegas Nevada after attending a boxing match.  He was rushed to the hospital, only to die several days later.

September 7, 1940: The Blitz begins.  In London on this day, 300 German bombers raid the city in the first of 57 consecutive nights during the Second World War.  This type of battle was to be called "blitzkrieg" or "lightening warfare"

September 7, 1813: The United States is given the nickname "Uncle Sam."  The name is linked to Samuel Wilson a meat packer from New York who supplied barrels of packed meat to the United States Army in 1812.  Wilson stamped "U.S." for United States, but soldiers started to refer to the meat as Uncle Sam's and the name stuck.
